Standing Committee on Global Surgery

(SCOGS)

What is SCOGS?

Did you know that five billion people worldwide lack access to safe surgical care, resulting in more than 17 million preventable deaths each year?

Did you know that this lack of access to safe surgical care is further responsible for a third (28-32%) of the global burden of disease?

There are 313 million surgeries around the world every year, but an additional 143 million additional interventions and 2.28 million additional surgeons, anesthetists and midwives are required to cover this unmet need. To increase access to safe surgery, anesthesia and obstetric care for all, it is essential that future generations of health professionals, public health specialists and policy makers are involved in global surgical discussions and interventions from the outset. The Standing Committee on Global Surgery does this by organizing lectures and interactive workshops on Global Surgery.
